The Ambient approach to localization
Ambient SmartPoints have the capability to determine their own location in the network (in three dimensional coordinates). SmartPoints use a combination of RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) and other patented techniques to calculate their position. This innovative approach is similar to GPS, but instead of communicating with a number of satallites, SmartPoints communicate with a number of MicroRouters in the wireless mesh network.
This approach removes the need for a seperate localistion engine. In combination with other capabilities it also enables additional business applications in the SmartPoint. For example a SmartPoint may be provided with a geographical zone. When a SmartPoint calculates its position and determines it is not located in this geographical zone, it will automatically send an alert.
